Background

Mission & Background

My name is Avery Owens. I am a sophomore at GCS High School in New York City with a deep commitment to education equity and community empowerment. I study public policy, constitutional law, and advocacy, and I compete in Public Forum Debate on topics including federal regulatory authority and governance.

I founded this GED peer-tutoring program because I believe that the path to a high school equivalency credential should not depend on access to expensive test prep services. This program pairs high school students directly with adult GED test-takers to deliver consistent, personalized academic support at no cost.

This resource hub is an extension of that mission. Every link, practice test, video lesson, and worksheet listed here has been vetted and verified. Nothing requires payment to access the core materials.

If you are an adult learner preparing for the GED, this site is built for you. If you are an educator or organization interested in partnering, please reach out.

Program Overview & Initiative Design

This program pairs qualified high school students with adult GED test-takers for one-on-one tutoring sessions. Tutors are matched based on subject-area strength and learner need. Sessions address all four GED subject areas — Mathematical Reasoning, Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies — and are structured around each learner's specific gaps.

Examination Overview: The GED Credential

The GED (General Educational Development) test is a nationally recognized high school equivalency credential. It is accepted by 97% of U.S. colleges, universities, and employers. The test consists of four separate subject exams, which can be taken individually and do not all have to be completed on the same day.

To pass, you must score at least 145 out of 200 on each subject exam. A score of 165 or above earns the "GED College Ready" distinction, and a score of 175+ may earn you college credit for that subject.

Mathematical Reasoning

115 Minutes

Quantitative and algebraic problem solving. Covers basic math, geometry, algebra, and data analysis. A calculator is provided for most of the section.

Reasoning Through Language Arts

150 Minutes (inc. 45-min essay)

Reading comprehension, grammar, and an extended response essay. Draws from fiction, nonfiction, and foundational American documents.

Science

90 Minutes

Life science, physical science, and Earth and space science. Focuses on reading scientific text, interpreting data, and applying reasoning skills.

Social Studies

70 Minutes

Civics and government (50%), U.S. history (20%), economics (15%), and geography (15%). Emphasizes reading comprehension and data interpretation.

165–174GED College Ready
175–200GED College Ready + Credit
01

Take a diagnostic test first

Before studying broadly, take a full practice test to identify which subjects and topics need the most attention.

02

Study one subject at a time

Most successful test-takers prepare for and take each subject exam separately rather than all four at once.

03

Use the official GED Ready test

The GED Ready is the only officially certified practice test. A "Likely to Pass" score is a strong predictor of success on test day.

04

Read extensively

Three of the four GED subjects require strong reading comprehension. Daily nonfiction reading dramatically improves performance across all sections.

05

Get comfortable with the format

The GED is computer-based and includes drag-and-drop, hot spot, and fill-in-the-blank question types. Practice these specifically.

06

Use the formula sheet

The math section provides a formula reference sheet. Learn how to use it effectively so you are not memorizing every formula from scratch.

GED Registration Procedure

Registration Protocol: Step-by-Step

Registering for the GED is straightforward. All scheduling, payment, and score reporting is handled through the official GED website. Each subject exam can be scheduled and taken separately.

1

Create a free account on GED.com

Go to www.ged.com and create a free account. This account is used for scheduling, score reporting, and accessing official study tools.

2

Verify your eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old, not currently enrolled in high school, and a resident of your state. Eligibility requirements vary slightly by state.

3

Take the GED Ready practice test

The GED Ready is the official practice test ($6 per subject). A score of "Likely to Pass" is the strongest predictor that you are ready for test day. Many test centers require it before scheduling.

4

Find and schedule your testing location

Use the testing center locator on GED.com to find an authorized center near you. In New York, the GED exam is offered free of charge to eligible residents.

5

Bring valid photo ID on test day

A government-issued photo ID is required — driver's license, passport, state ID, or military ID. Cell phones and personal electronics are not permitted in the testing room.

6

Receive scores within 3 hours

GED scores are delivered electronically within approximately 3 hours of completing each exam. If you do not pass a subject, you may retake it up to 3 times per calendar year before a waiting period applies.
